01Tehran: Welcoming friendlier ties with Sri Lanka, Iran has offered to provide the island nation with technical and engineering services.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to prepare the groundwork for providing Sri Lanka with technical-engineering services in all fields, especially energy,” Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said.

President Rouhani made this remark during a meeting on Sunday with Speaker of Sri Lanka Parliament, Karu Jayasuriya, who is visiting Teheran.

“Iran-Sri Lanka ties have always been friendly and close and today, with regard to the lifting of sanctions, there are very good opportunities for developing relations between the two countries that can be taken advantage of to benefit the existing ties between the parliaments and governments of the two countries,” Rouhani said.

Stating that Iran welcomed closer and friendlier ties with Sri Lanka, Rouhani expressed hope that banking relations between the two countries would be further developed to establish a solid base for cementing economic and commercial ties. At the meeting, Speaker Jayasuriya congratulated Dr. Rouhani on his re-election and said: “Iran and Sri Lanka have had historical and cultural ties and the people of Sri Lanka hold the Iranian nation in profound respect.”

He also thanked Iran for supporting Sri Lanka in various fields while calling for the development of trade and economic ties between the two countries, especially in a post-sanctions era.
