Jaffna Commander meets UN representative

Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) United Nations Office Head Agnes Asekenye-Oonyu, arrived in Palaly this week, and met the Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe. Asekenye-Oonyu was accompanied by the deputy head of the mission, Mark Prasopa-Plaizier.

During the discussions, Jaffna Security Forces Commander explained the process of Palaly airport and Kankesanthurai harbour expansion and denied all the rumours and fabricated false allegations on forceful land acquisition. He explained the progress of the rapid development and Government’s commitment for infrastructure development including ports and harbours.

He explained that the fishing folk pertinent to the expansion projects will be resettled in Government lands along the coastal belt soon, and they will be adequately compensated on par with the present land value. Majority of the lands among them belongs to the Government institutions.

The visiting delegation was elaborated on the current deployment of troops in the peninsula and gradual decrease of the military presence since the conclusion of the conflict. The Government’s efforts in the post war development process came under praise of Asekenye-Oonyu.
