A coalition partner of the Sri Lankan government, the Sinhala nationalist Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) is to call on the government to introduce a system for the public to know the assets of candidates contesting elections.
Senior JHU member and Western Provincial Council Minister Udaya Gammanpila says that a majority of the politicians, especially, candidates at local government elections, did not declare their assets.
Speaking after the handing over the asset declarations to the Elections Commissioner by five JHU candidates contesting at the forthcoming local government elections, he has said that less than one percent of the candidates declare their assets.
According to Gammanpila, declaring assets would help improve good governance in the country and the JHU was committed to it. (Colombo Page)
