The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), which is supporting Opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena at the presidential election next month, noted that the main focus of the polls was on democracy and good governance. JHU General Secretary Champika Ranawaka said that while the main Tamil parties look to decide who they would support at the election, the goal of the Opposition candidate was not to focus on any ethnic issue. “This election is not about issues faced by the Tamils, Sinhalese or Muslims. This is about democracy and good governance,” the former Minister said yesterday. He said that the people must decide if they wanted to allow the country to head towards destruction or make a change to ensure democracy was established. Ranawaka said that the people must not be misled by false propaganda and instead think about the future of their children and back a system which would give equal opportunities for all in the country. He said that it was no secret that if Maithripala Sirisena were to win the election next month he would look to make constitutional changes and form a national government consisting of all political parties represented in Parliament.
