A group of Buddhist monks is expected to issue a directive against the Government’s move to sell the Hambantota Port, Joint Opposition MP Dullas Alahapperuma said yesterday.

He said a large gathering of Buddhist monks will hand over the directive to the Government on 7 January when the Government is hoping to sign the agreement with China to lease the Hambantota Port. Alahapperuma also said that those Buddhist monks would hold a Satyagraha on the same day at the Port premises to stop the signing of the agreement. He said Buddhist clergy from the Hambantota, Moneragala, Matara and Ratnapura districts would participate in the event.

He added that the Government could not ignore a directive issued by the country’s Buddhist monks.
