Justice Minister Hakeem meets Iranian counterpart

Minister of Justice and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem, who is on an official visit at Iran, met Seyyed Morteza Bakthiary at his Ministry in Tehran on Saturday 22 December, and discussed matters pertaining to bilateral and legal issues.

Both Ministers recalled the excellent diplomatic relationships enjoyed by two countries.

Iranian Minister said both countries are very active members of the non-aligned movement and Iran currently holds the NAM Chairmanship. He noted that there is close cooperation and cordial relationships at the highest level between both Governments.

Minister Hakeem thanked the Iranian Government, for assisting Sri Lanka in number of major projects. He referred to Uma Oya development project and the rural electrification program. In addition Iran had been supplying bulk of the oil needs to Sri Lanka on a very concessionary payment scheme. He also said that Sri Lanka always supported Iran at various international fora.

Iranian Minister thanked Sri Lanka, for the support extended by Sri Lanka in international fora.

Minister Hakeem suggested that both countries to sign agreements with regard to exchange of prisoners and mutual legal assistance in criminal and civil matters. Iranian Minister agreed that both countries vigorously peruse the matter, and also suggested that both countries to sign an extradition treaty.

Minister Hakeem also referred to the proposed international arbitration centre in Colombo. He requested his Iranian counterpart, to offer assistance to mark the centre in Iranian chambers and professional bodies. The Iranian Minister agreed and suggested that Sri Lanka make contacts with the NAM secretariat.

Iranian Minister suggested both Ministries should explore the possibilities of arranging training and exchange programs in the legal and judicial fields.
