The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday wrote to the Defence Secretary objecting to allowing former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son Navy officer Yoshitha Rajapaksa travel overseas while being subjected to an inquiry. The letter was written by JVP Western Provincial Councillor Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa who initially handed over a complaint to Defence Secretary B.M.U.D. Basnayake seeking an investigation into Yoshitha Rajapaksa on how he joined the Navy, was granted foreign scholarships and participated in active politics while serving in an armed force. Dr. Jayatissa has stated in his letter today that it was unacceptable that Yoshitha Rajapaksa was granted leave to travel overseas on a personal trip by Sri Lanka Navy when he was facing 13 charges of wrong doing. He has noted that the initial complaint was lodged on 25 January this year and that a proper investigation has not been launched into the complaint. However, a few days after the complaint was handed over to the Defence Secretary in January, Sri Lanka Navy Spokesperson Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya was quoted in the local media as saying that the Navy Commander has ordered a probe on Rajapaksa following a directive issued by the Defence Secretary.
