The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has called on the people to avoid racial or religious conflicts and develop unity amongst all peoples.

The JVP Political Bureau in a statement released Sunday called upon communities of all nationalities and religions to “not to be emotional but think intelligently, recognize the true issues confronted by the masses and come forward to overcome them by building unity among people.”

“If anyone acts in a manner that would create clashes and conflicts among communities instead of recognizing the real issues that are before us and act to defeat them, it would only be advantageous not to the masses but to the reactionary forces,” the party said.

Pointing out that creating conflicts would blot out the real issues and protect the real offenders, the JVP said it is the public that is worst affected by the crises that are continually worsening daily.

The statement noted that people are distressed economically as living conditions are worsened due to increase in prices of commodities while salaries are not increased accordingly and people’s earnings dwindle.

The party charged that attempts are being made to manipulate the judiciary jeopardizing democracy and allowing foreign forces to act against the country using human rights issues and internal conflicts.

While the increase in crime within the country also has distressed and inconvenienced the people a tendency is surfacing to inflame communalist and religious clashes in the country, the JVP noted.

The party urged all aggrieved parties to unite to confront the real crises and not to pave the way for another conflict similar to the one the country suffered for 30 years.
