Failure will see Government’s election manifesto resting in the dustbin like many others Claims SLFP wants to destroy Mahinda Rajapaksa Harsha says 100-day program will be a success By Jayashika Padmasiri The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday requested the Government to complete the 100-day program and dissolve Parliament to set the stage for a general election. JVP member Lal Kantha, addressing a seminar organised by the Purawasi Balaya organisation in Colombo yesterday said that if the Government failed to implement the reforms they promised in the 100-day program and call for an election soon afterwards, then this Government’s election manifesto would be resting in the dustbin like many other election manifestoes. “So the JVP is of the opinion that Parliament should be dissolved. And these reforms and promises of the 100-day program should be implemented before such a step is taken because otherwise the country will not get another opportunity to make these changes again. “However, we must understand that right now the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) wants to destroy Mahinda Rajapaksa while the United National Party (UNP) wants Rajapaksa to come back to politics because they know that without him they cannot split the SLFP. Neither does the SLFP want the Government to be dissolved in April because the SLFP is aware that if such a step is taken, then it would be advantageous to Rajapaksa,” Lal Kantha said. Speaking further about the pro-Rajapaksa rally held in Nugegoda he said that it depicted Mahinda Rajapaksa’s political aspirations while also stating that the rally was not held for Wimal Weerawansa’s need but to establish Rajapaksa’s plan to come back into politics. “Politicians who are supporting Rajapaksa at present such as Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, Dinesh Gunawardena and Vasudeva Nanayakkara are supporting him today because they have no other way to sustain themselves in politics. However, now Rajapaksa hasn’t got any space in the SLFP so he has to think of a way to enter politics again such as through another political front because he wants his family to continue in politics. So he has that need and he will go to the 5,000,000 people who voted for him at the 2015 presidential election,” he said. Deputy Minister of Policy Planning and Economic Affairs, Dr. Harsha De Silva, who was also present at the meeting, said that they would try their best to make the 100-day program of the Government a success. “Mahinda Rajapaksa, who won the war, lost the election because he failed to win the economic war. So we will create a better economy in the country while making the 100-day program a success,” De Silva added. He said that the Parliament would be dissolved on the day the Prime Minister had stated that it would be dissolved, as the Prime Minister and the President are working with an understanding regarding this matter.
