The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday said that it was the best option people had to remove the current Government at the forthcoming election.

Addressing its Maharagama election rally, JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake claimed that the Government had failed to fulfil the people’s aspirations during the past six months.

“The people gave a mandate to the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) joint Government to full fill their small needs. However, the Government did not have sufficient power to make important decisions in Parliament,” Dissanayake said.

He went on to state that the Government did not allow certain policies and regulations that were important for the country’s survival to be passed.

“The JVP drafted the code of ethics for MPs and we handed it over to the Executive Council. President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe did not let it pass. Some amendments for the 19th Amendment that were proposed by the JVP were not included in its final version. So the executive presidency is still active and only some of its powers were reduced,” he said.

Dissanayake went on to state that President Sirisena and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa could “only meet in the dark.”

“They both contested against each other at the presidential election. Now they have become associates. However, we believe that they can only meet in the dark because of the guilt they harbour,” Dissanayake said.

The JVP Leader also claimed that President Sirisena and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe had let some of the real culprits away without properly punishing them.

“The police Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption conducted a number of investigations against certain former MPs and officers. However, those investigations were halted on the President and Prime Minister’s orders. This is the way they are going to run the country,” Dissanayake said.
