The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says it is ready to implement a new Constitution as the country’s outdated present Constitution has led to a dictatorship. “We hope to implement a new constitution. The present Constitution has created a constitutional dictatorship. The present Executive has swallowed the Parliament and the Judiciary,” JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said Thursday. Addressing the media after a meeting with the Buddhist Chief Prelate of Malwatte Chapter Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thero in Kandy on Thursday, Dissanayake said the present Constitution had obstructed achieving unity among the Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslims. However, he said the issues confronted by a country cannot be solved with a constitution only. This is an outdated Constitution. It should be changed. There should be a change in social and economic system as well,” said the JVP Leader. The JVP Leader and the party’s National Organiser Bimal Ratnayaka had a discussion on the present situation of the country with the Chief Prelate on the 18th morning. Dissanayake said the party believes that at the next presidential election it would get an opportunity to win a better life for the people in the country. “We had a long discussion with the Mahanayake regarding what type of situation would exist at a future presidential election, that the present situation is not auspicious for the country and the people and how it could be changed,” he said. Speaking of a common Opposition presidential candidate, the JVP Leader excluded the current Opposition and United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the “other side of the same coin” as the Government. “He is the other side of the Government, the other side of the same coin. As such, what the country needs is not the same kind of a government or a leader,” Dissanayake said. He said what Sri Lanka needs is not a mere change of regime or leaders but a change in the governing system. “We don’t believe that a mere change of regime or leaders would not do any good for our country. Instead of the socio-economic policies that are being followed, the country should be transformed into a country with a new administration that is congenial to the masses.” Dissanayake said the JVP is prepared to have discussions with all sections for such a task. “We are endeavouring for such a change.”
