Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has called on the Government to immediately address the issues faced by the university lecturers.
JVP parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the government should not allow the current crisis in the university sector to further aggravate.
He explained that the university lecturers were on strike to win four demands and the government needed to address them.
Dissanayake noted that the first demand was the budgetary allocation of a 6 percent of GDP to the education sector in order to develop the country’s education system.
Their other demands were to stop political influences in the education sector and to be consulted when preparing national policies on education. According to Dissanayake, the final demand of the university lecturers is to solve their salary issue. He further said that there is currently a shortage of about 1,600 university academics since there are only 4,200 when the requirement is for 5,800 persons.
