The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has said the party wants the next general election to be held under the Proportional Representative (PR) system. JVP Leader Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake said at a political talk show on a private television station that the forthcoming general election expected within this year should be the last election under the proportional voting system. He said the next general election should not be held under the proposed electoral system. He explained that the 19th Amendment to the Constitution should first be passed in Parliament. “After that we can change the electoral system. There is no need to hold the general election under the changed electoral system because general public is not aware about the new system,” Dissanayake has said. According to the JVP, the usual practice is to give at least one year to the citizens in a country to study a new electoral system. “Public awareness is very important,” Dissanayake added.
