The Ministry of Highways and Investment Promotion, under the patronage of Minister Kabir Hashim, this week launched an island-wide rehabilitation project of the rural road network.

Several new road projects were unveiled by the Minister yesterday in the Kegalle District and more such projects will be unveiled around the country in the coming days.

Under this new program every electorate has been allocated Rs. 30 million to build necessary roads and repair those that require it.

The aim of this project is to reconnect rural and urban centres with one another through a well-built and maintained road network.

The UNP-led Government said that contrary to comments made by the former regime, it was committed to continuing the development of Sri Lanka. However, development under the new Government will shift its focus to ensuring that benefits were enjoyed by everyone in the country.

The rural road project, which was launched this week, will be carried out throughout the entire country.
