The United National Party (UNP) yesterday assured that it would not take Parliamentarian Keheliya Rambukwella back to the UNP.

Rambukwella left the UNP and joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) during former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s tenure.

United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Kabir Hashim issuing a press release yesterday said Rambukwella was making statements saying he would not join the UNP when nobody in the UNP had made any statements saying he would.

“Rambukwella tried to whitewash every crime of the Rajapaksa Government. We have no intention or need to welcome such a person into our party. Though this is our party’s stance regarding Rambukwella, after the defeat of Rajapaksa and the fall of the previous regime, Rambukwella approached Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and tried to join the UNP several times,” Hashim revealed.

Commenting further, he explained that the UNP would only take people who respected good governance, who were civilised and committed to democracy and were ready to form a new political culture in the country and not criminals.
