The treatment meted out to popular artiste Saman De Silva inside the Welikada Prison premises was a glaring illustration of the depths to which this country has sunk, the main opposition United National Party said in a statement yesterday. Issuing a media release UNP Leadership Council Chairman Karu Jayasuriya said that it was all the more galling that the incident had taken place in the prison where authorities were trying to rehabilitate those members of society who had lost their way. “On such premises, exemplary and disciplined behaviour is of paramount importance,” Jayasuriya’s statement said. “Those inside those prison walls should see a picture of civilised behaviour, but this was not the case in the incident involving the singer Saman De Silva,” Jayasuriya said. The singer was assaulted at the prison premises during a musical show performance. Southern Provincial Council Minister Bindu Weerasinghe has been arrested in connection with the incident on the orders of the Borella Magistrate. The Minister surrendered to the authorities yesterday.
