Sri Lanka has created yet another world record for constructing the world’s most expensive highway, the main opposition United National Party charged yesterday. UNP Communications Director and MP Mangala Samaraweera said that the Government had spent a whopping Rs. 1.8 billion per kilometre on the 26km expressway linking the capital Colombo to the Bandaranaike International Airport. Addressing a news conference at Sirikotha yesterday, Samaraweera charged that the Chinese Government had built a 50 km highway in Kenya that had only cost Rs. 972 million per km. “Clearly someone or other has earned Rs. 1 billion per kilometre on the Katunayake Expressway,” the outspoken UNP MP said.
