Acting on the instruction of Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa, Attorney-at-Law and Liya Abhiman Organisation Chairperson Pushpa Rajapaksa the provincial road carpeting work of the Kelaniya electorate division began recently. Inauguration ceremony was held to begin work on the carpeting of 10 roads maintained by the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha and Peliyagoda Urban Council.

The road development program of Gampaha District was implemented under the several stages. As the first stage, steps were taken to develop provincial and rural roads. Under the second stage of ‘Ran Aruna’ program, steps were taken to construct highways and canals, child and maternity clinics and jogging tracks. Third stage of road development program of the Gampaha District has already been commenced.

Under the third stage, steps were taken to develop roads, which are important to people and those maintained by Pradeshiya Sabhas and urban councils. Many practical issues have been arisen in maintaining these roads for local Government institutions. When roads have become dilapidated, much time was spent to develop these roads. Hence Basil Rajapaksa, having realised the difficulties confronted by the people, has given instructions to develop these roads, by carpeting under the financial provisions of Ministry of Economic Development.

The Ministry of Economic Development expects that this project would help to accelerate the development in rural areas of Gampaha District and also contribute towards the development of the economy and social activities.
