Korea will fund a project to provide electricity to four islands located north of Sri Lanka before the end of 2013, the Ministry of Power and Energy said.
The four islands are Delft, Naiithivu (Nagadeepa), Anlathivu and Elithivu and nearly 3,000 families live in those. Electrification projects via renewable energy will be a key emphasis on providing power for these islands.
At present electricity is sourced via diesel-powered generators benefitting a few families.
Minister Champika Ranawaka together with Korean Ambassador Choy Jong Ming yesterday made an inspection tour of the Delft islands.
Several mobile solar power units were also provided to some of the families living in the island.
