Sri Lanka is expected to feature in the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) meeting which will take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly sessions in New York today. The meeting is scheduled to take place around 9 a.m. Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma who is currently in New York will attend the CMAG meeting. Sharma has been criticised by some CMAG members led by Canada for failing to disclose two key legal opinions his office had commissioned about the Sri Lankan impeachment of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake. The Secretary General has consistently refused to reveal the contents of the legal reports to CMAG, in spite of at least one report – by former South African Chief Justice Pius Langa now being in the public domain. Several CMAG members have also called for a full briefing on Sri Lanka’s human rights situation at today’s meeting but it is unclear whether it will take place. (DB)
