Lankan women MPs meet US Assistant Secretary Biswal

Sri Lankan women legislators met with US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Biswal in Washington DC on Thursday, to discuss the role of women in the promotion of peace and reconciliation. Biswal, who visited Sri Lanka earlier this year, tweeted about her meeting with Government and Opposition female Parliamentarians. “I met with Sri Lankan women Parliamentarians and discussed combating violence against women and role of women in advancing peace and reconciliation,” the US Assistant Secretary tweeted yesterday. The group of Parliamentarians is presently on a visit to the United States. Parliamentarians Sumedha Jayasena, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Sudharshani Fernandopulle, Kamala Ranathunga, Sriyani Wijewickrama and Upeksha Swarnamali represented the ruling UPFA coalition while lawmakers Rosy Senanayake, Anoma Gamage, Wijayakala Maheshwaran and Chandrani Bandara represented the Opposition.
