Lankans arrested in Mumbai for trying to smuggle out US dollars

Mumbai: Two Sri Lankan nationals have been arrested by the authorities of India’s Customs Department at the Mumbai airport yesterday when they attempted to smuggle out foreign currency worth over INR 2 million.

On examination by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officers, two Sri Lankan nationals, Aathil Abdul Jabbar and Mohammed Ramzan were found carrying foreign currency notes of $ 31,000, equivalent to Rs. 21.23 lakh while departing to Colombo by Jet Airways flight, Indian media reported.

According to the officials, the currency was concealed in pockets of three trousers which were kept in their hand luggage.

Further investigations are in progress. Since January, the AIU has seized foreign currency worth INR 8 million from the Mumbai Airport being illegally smuggled out of the country.
