Lasantha murder suspect released on bail

The Colombo High Court yesterday released a Lance Corporal of the Sri Lanka Army on  cash and sureties bail for alleged involvement in the killing of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge.

Colombo High Court Judge Pathman Surasena released the Lance Corporal (776043) Kandegedera Piyawansa of the Intelligence Unit of Sri Lanka army on Rs. 75.000 cash with two sureties for Rs. 100,000 on each.

When the matter was taken up for inquiry the counsel for the suspect, Senaka Ullandupitiya contended that the suspect had been in remand for a long period of time without instituting charges.

He said the suspect was arrested while being a Lance Corporal in the Tripoli Army Camp at Technical Junction Maradana allegedly for the killing of Lasantha Wickrematunge.
