‘Lawyers Collective’ in a statement has condemned the attack by Israel on unarmed civilians in Gaza and other parts of Palestine in the guise of neutralising armed Hamas militants, who have also resorted to provocative attacks. Over a thousand civilians have died upto date and caused injuries to thousands including children, disabled and old persons and patients in hospitals.  These attacks are in violation of all international conventions on armed conflicts and in violation of universally accepted human rights. What is of serious concern is the lethargic attitude of the international community and the Security Council of the United Nations. The international community though lacks the authority to intervene directly; has to use its influence to prevent blatant violations of international conventions and human rights. This attack by Israel has once again raised the necessity of meaningful international action intervene when international conventions and human rights are violated in such a scale that it amounts to genocide. As indicated by the UN Human Rights Commissioner, these attacks amount to war crimes. Any such war crime anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere. Lawyers Collective believes that the international community has a duty to investigate and punish those who are responsible for war crimes in any part of the world. We call upon the international community to use all means at this command to bring a halt to these war crimes, Lawyers Collective said.
