Lawyers for Democracy to discuss attacks

Lawyers for Democracy is to host a public meeting to discuss the recent attacks on the independence of the Judiciary. This meeting is of significant importance for lawyers, Judiciary, media and ultimately for the public. This is also intended to provide a forum for participants to discuss and learn more about the present threats and attacks to the Judiciary, thereby undermining Rule of Law in Sri Lanka.

The meeting will be held at New Town Hall Colombo today, 10 October 2012, from 3:30 p.m. onwards. The panel of speakers will include Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero, Lal Wijenayaka, Nimalka Fernando, Nirmal Ranjith Devesiri, Chandrapala Kumarage, K.S. Ratnavale, J.C. Weliamuna, Gunarathne Wanninayaka, Joseph Stalin and K.W. Janaranjana.

Lawyers of Democracy (LfD) is a representative body of legal practitioners throughout the island. Conveners include Lal Wijenayaka, Chandrapala Kumarage, K.S. Ratnavale, J.C. Weliamuna, Sudath Netthisinghe and Sudarshana Gunawardana. It was established on 10 December 2009.
