The Attorney General had instructed the Police to take legal action against four Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) trade union activists who allegedly attacked a CEB woman Engineer with tomatoes when she did not take part in a strike organised by several trade unions in 2007.

The Attorney General had instructed the Slave Island Police that the four suspects be charged under unlawful assembly and use of criminal force on the CEB Engineer opposite the CEB Head Office in Colombo 2.

When the case came up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage, the four suspects – Wijesiri Walpola, P.R. Lionel, A.N.K. Dias and G. Weerasekara – were present in Court.

Meanwhile, the Magistrate ordered that the witnesses in the case be present in Court on 10 June.

The complainant Anuruddhika Wickremaratne alleged that she was attacked with tomatoes when she was leaving the office on 10 October 2007. She further alleged that she witnessed the four trade union activists holding tomatoes in their hands.
