Sri Lanka’s oldest political party Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) held its 76th anniversary on Sunday.

The anniversary was held at the D.A Rajapaksa Suditorium in Embilipitiya with the participation of Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, Ministers, MPs, diplomats and the representatives of other political parties.

The Lanka Sama Samaja Party was formed on 18 December 1935, and is the oldest political party in Sri Lanka.

Dr. N.M Perera, Dr. Colvin R. de Silva, Dr. S.A Wickemasinghe, Lesley Gunawardena, and Vivian Gunawardena were some of the founder members of the party.

Dr. S.A Wickremasinghe however, left the party on ideological grounds and founded the Communist Party of Ceylon in 1943.

The LSSP joined the government of the late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike as a coalition partner of the government in 1964.
