LSSP pledges support to the President

Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), a leftist party of ruling coalition, has decided to support the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa running for a third term at the upcoming presidential elections next month. A delegation of the party, led by its leader Senior Minister Tissa Vitharana conveyed the party’s support to the President at a meeting with him yesterday at Temple Trees. The party leadership was under pressure from some of the party’s electoral organizers to support the opposition common candidate. A section of the Central Committee of the LSSP also voted in favor of the common candidate before former minister Maithripala Sirisena announced that he would be the common candidate. LSSP central committee member Ven. Baddegama samitha Thera, Deputy Secretary Anil de Soyza, national organizer Y. G. Padmasiri, ministers Susil Premajayantha and Nimal Sirirpala de Silva also participated in the meeting.
