Mahinda Deshapriya appointed Chairman of independent Election Commission

The Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has been appointed the Chairman of the Independent Election Commission which came to effect under the 19th Constitutional Amendment.

Other members of the commission are: N.N.J. Abeysekera and S.R.H. Hoole.It is reported that the names of the appointees have been endorsed by the President.

Members to five independent Commissions under the 19th Amendment have been appointed already.  They are: the National Police Commission, Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption, Human Rights Commission and Public Service Commission.

The Constitutional Council which met recently recommended names of members for the rest of the proposed commissions including Finance Commission, Auditing Service Commission, Delimitation Commission and National Procurement Commission.

Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Neil Iddawala said that the recommended names have already been submitted to the president for approval.
