President Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday it was the duty of the newly appointed ministry officials to act with determination and patience to restore the ruined image of the eroded public service. After handing over letters of appointment to new Secretaries to Ministries at the Presidential Secretariat, President Sirisena said it is the responsibility of the new secretaries to ensure the pledge of good governance of the new administration is implemented in full. President Sirisena stressed that it is the responsibility of all government officials to win the hearts and minds of the general public by diligently discharging their duties and responsibilities.                         He said it is essentially an obligation of the public officials to totally prevent the incidents of bribery, corruption, wastage and irregularities and asked them to set an example to restore the ruined image of the Public Service that was heavily eroded in recent years. “Public service is a service to serve the people, and it is your duty to ensure that the people visiting the government offices receive a proper hearing and a speedy service,” he said. The people have elected the government after accepting the election manifesto presented, and therefore, it is the duty of the newly appointed officials to implement the measures presented in the election manifesto, the President said. He urged the secretaries to take effective steps to end corrupt practices and malpractices in the Public Sector and asked them to use their knowledge and experience to serve the government and the people. The President requested all the secretaries to adhere to the policies of the government and work with determination and patience to realize practical decisions of the government. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and Secretary to the President P. B. Abeykoon were also present at the occasion.
