Common opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe have decided to take legal action against Health Minister and former UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake over an alleged secret document he displayed to the media with the signatures of Sirisena and Wickremesinghe. The JHU’s Athuraliye Rathana Thero was also present at the press conference - Pic by Shehan Gunasekara   The former General Secretary released a document yesterday that the Opposition claims has been fabricated entirely, claiming a secret pact between Sirisena and Wickremesinghe to grant concessions to the Tamil National Alliance. Addressing a joint media briefing at the Opposition Leader’s office in Colombo yesterday, Wickremesinghe and Sirisena strongly denied the existence of such a document and accused Attanayake of forging their signatures - a criminal office. Wickremesinghe said they had written to IGP N.K. Illangakoon, demanding a full investigation into the document which was disseminated by Attanayake at a press briefing in Colombo on Monday. “Our signatures are placed on documents with great responsibility. We are going to courts over this. And we urge the public not to fall for politicians like Attanayake who have fallen to such depths,” Sirisena told reporters. The alleged ‘secret pact’ between the two leaders, Attanayake said, was an agreement which was ‘detrimental’ to the country. (DB)
