Major General Silva to give evidence

The Court today issued warrants for Major General Shavendra Silva to appear in the court next Monday (15) to give evidence in the controversial ‘white flag’ case.

The Colombo High Court issued the directive today since the cross examination of The Sunday Leader Editor Frederica Jansz ended yesterday.

Deputy Solicitor General Wasantha Navaratne Bandara re-examined the evidence given by Jansz and informed the court that he would like to hear the evidence from the third witness in the case, Major General Silva.

Major General Silva was the Commander of the 58th Brigade during the final stages of the war last year and is currently the Deputy Permanent Representative in the Sri Lankan Mission to the United Nations in New York.

The white flag case was filed by the Government against the former Army Commander and DNA Leader Sarath Fonseka for allegedly telling The Sunday Leader Editor Jansz in an interview during the presidential election campaign that the Defence Secretary had ordered the killing of LTTE leaders who tried to surrender carrying white flags during the final stages of the war.
