Malaka, Rehan discharged from assault case

The son of Mervyn Silva, Malaka, Rehan Wijeyrathne and four other suspects were discharged yesterday from the assault case of an Army Major on instructions of the Attorney General.

Seven suspects including Malaka and Rehan were produced in court earlier for the alleged assault of Major Chandana Pradeep Susena and stolen his chain and mobile phone at Hilton Residences, Colombo late last year.

Earlier, the Army Major recanted his previous statement and said that he could not identify those who assaulted him.

When the matter was taken up for inquiry before Fort Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya, Slave Island Police Crimes OIC Nalaka Gunasekera informed the Magistrate that they would withdraw the case against the suspects on the instructions of the Attorney General who advised Police to withdraw the case.

He also told the Magistrate that the Army Officer Pradeep Chandana Susena who was the victim and complainant in the case was presently attached to the Army camp at Vavuniya.
