Malaysia’s Bar Council has suggested chemical castration for repeat sex offenders as an alternative to prison.

Chemical castration involves the administration of anti-androgen drugs given via injection to the buttocks, thigh or shoulder.

The drugs reduce testosterone levels by competing with androgens for androgen receptors. The depletion of male hormones shuts down the libido.

The injection must be repeated once every three months.

Opponents of chemical castration say the practice could have long-term side effects (side effects) such as loss of bone density, osteoporosis, reduced muscle mass, increased risk of heart disease, and behavioural problems.
