UNP Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera who surrendered before the Matara Police last morning was released on bail after being produced in Court yesterday.
Samaraweera and two others who handed themselves in to the police at 9 a.m. yesterday were produced before Matara Chief Magistrate and granted bail of Rs. 100,000 each, in connection with three separate cases, Lawyers for the MP told Daily FT.
Charges against the UNP Parliamentarian include organising an illegal protest and inciting violence while a third B report produced to court by Matara Police states that Samaraweera damaged a vehicle involved in the anti-Ranil protest in Matara before the procession started and stole two megaphones inside, the lawyers said.
UNP Devinuwara Organiser H.R. Wimalasiri and Balapitiya Organiser and Attorney-at-Law Kamal Soysa were also taken into custody following their surrender last morning and released on bail. Police sought the arrest of Samaraweera and 10 others on Monday but the Magistrate declined to issue a warrant for the arrests and ordered the police to make the arrests if there was sufficient evidence.
The arrests were made in connection with the violent clashes between two warring UNP factions during separate protests in Matara on 5 October.
The case will be taken up again on 21 October.
