The Alliance of Media rights groups have condemned with disgust the death threats against Jaffna based Tamil journalists who covered the military demolition of civilian homes in Valikamam North earlier this week. Issuing a media statement, the Alliance alleged that the threats had been issued against the journalists by military personnel when the journalists went to cover the demolition. “This incident is not only a powerful assault on the freedom of the press but also causes harm to the citizen’s right to information,” the alliance said in a statement. The Alliance strongly urged the military to refrain from impeding journalists in their professional duties. The Alliance includes several media activist groups; the Free Media Movement, Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association, the South Asian Free Media Association (Sri Lanka Chapter) and the Sri Lanka Tamil Journalists Alliance, the Sri Lanka Muslim Media Alliance and several other groups.
