The Government yesterday played down reports of attacks and threats on religious minorities in Sri Lanka and insisted that such incidents were only isolated. Deputy Minister of Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs M.K.A.D.S. Gunawardena, responding to a question raised by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake in Parliament, said that there are no targeted attacks on Muslims in the country. The Deputy Minister also said that no one has raised the issue of “religious intolerance” in Sri Lanka at any meeting with the Government. Karunanayake questioned the Government on what action was being taken to address reports of attacks and threats on Muslims and places worship. Meanwhile, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne intervened and noted that anyone who follows their religion to the book will not be able to be converted easily. Buddhist groups have been accusing some Muslim and Christian organisations in Sri Lanka of attempting to carry out illegal conversations. (Colombo Gazette)
