Missing persons commission to hand in report to President

The Presidential Commission Investigating Cases of Missing Persons is preparing to hand in an interim report regarding cases of missing persons to President Maithripala Sirisena, the Secretary to the Commission, H.W. Gunadasa, said. The interim report will be handed to the President on 18 March, the official said. The commission just concluded its public sittings in the Trincomalee District which were held from 28 February to 3 March. The commission has interviewed 303 complainants during the public sittings it held in the Trincomalee District. Out of the 294 complainants invited by the commission, 128 attended the hearings. The commission also interviewed 175 new complainants while during its four-day hearings 474 new complaints were registered. The commission has set a separate date to hear cases from the Muttur area of the district. Since the establishment of the commission on 15 August 2013, it has received in excess of 20,106 complaints, inclusive of approximately 5,000 complaints from relatives of missing security forces personnel.
