Missing Persons Commission’s fifth sittings in Mullaitivu

The Presidential Commission to Investigate into Complaints Regarding Missing Persons will conduct its fifth round of Public Sittings in the Mullaitivu District from 5 to 8 July. Sittings will be held at the Puthukkudiyiruppu Divisional Secretariat on 5 and 6 July, and at Maritimepattu Divisional Secretariat on 7 and 8 July. The Commission has held its previous public sittings in Northern and Eastern Provinces covering Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Batticaloa Districts. At the previous hearing which was held in Batticaloa from 6 to 9 June 2014, the Commission inquired evidence related to 195 complaints. In addition, the Commission also received 216 new complaints during the four days of public sitting. The Commission also recorded evidence in relation to the Kurukkalmadam massacre where the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) allegedly killed 163 Muslims in 1990s. To date, 18,789 complaints have been received by the Commission, inclusive of approximately 5,000 complaints from relatives of missing security forces personnel. The Commission has thus far inquired into 462 complaints, which are being analysed for further investigations through an independent investigation team.
