Modi tells Ranil: Rich experience will be crucial to guiding Lanka’s destiny at crucial juncture

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered his “heartiest congratulations” to Sri Lanka’s new Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, recalling efforts during his previous tenures in the same office to strengthen bilateral ties. In a letter to Prime Minister Wickremesinghe on Monday, Prime Minister Modi said the people of Sri Lanka had reposed their faith in a new government. “The rich experience you will bring to bear in discharging the responsibilities of this august office will be invaluable in guiding the destiny of Sri Lanka at this crucial juncture,” the letter from the Indian Leader said. “We warmly recall the efforts made by you during your tenures as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka to strengthen relations between our two countries. I look forward to working with your Excellency to bring our two countries even closer particularly through the deepening of our economic engagement. New Delhi has made no secret that it is pleased to welcome the new regime in Sri Lanka into office, with Prime Minister Modi being the first world leader to congratulate President Maithripala Sirisena.
