Blessed with knowledge and understanding, the Most Ven. Aggamahapanditha Bellana Gnanawimala Mahanayaka Thera was able to create a generation of learned Buddhist monks and lay disciples, states President Mahinda Rajapaksa in a condolence message on the passing away of the Most Ven. Bellana Gnanawimala Mahanayaka Thera of the Kotte Chapter of the Siyam Nikaya.
The President’s condolence message stated:
“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing away of the Mahanayaka Thera of the Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Dhrama Sabha, The Chief Incumbent of the Sri Sobhitha Sanghaarama, Aggamaha Panditha Most Ven. Bellana Gnanawimala Mahanayaka Thera, who rendered a yeoman service to the education sector of this country and to the people around the world in disseminating the teachings of the Buddha. The Government of Myanmar conferred our Mahanayaka Thera the honorary title of Aggamahapanditha in recognition of his service to the Buddha Sasana.
“Most Ven Bellana Gnanawimala of the Kotte Chapter of the Siyam Nikaya was born in the Bellana village in Kalutara. He received higher ordination and higher education under his mentors at Maligakanda Vidyodaya Pirivena. The Most Venerable Thera served as the Deputy Principal of the Vidyodaya Pirivena for a long period. He was the Chairman of the Pirivena Education Borad and the Chief Editor of the Mahavamsa and Thriptaka Editorial Boards.
“I see the Venerable Thera’s passing away as a great loss to the Buddha Sasana. My deepest sympathies to his students, the Buddhist clergy, to Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha , the members of relevant Daayaka Sabhas and the people who have been close to him. May our Mahanayaka Thera, who spent his last days at Valukarama of Kollupitiya until he passed away at the age of 95, attain Nibbana.”
