MP Code of Conduct presented to House

The final draft of the proposed Code of Conduct for lawmakers was presented to Parliament yesterday. 

Seeking support from fellow members of the House to establish the Code of Conduct and to uphold the respect and decorum of Parliament, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said: “The code has been formulated with the intention of ensuring the protection of the dignity and decorum of the House and to rebuild the public’s trust in MPs who will be required to maintain the highest standards of conduct.”

According to the Speaker, the proposed Code of Conduct has been prepared with the opinions and suggestions of local and foreign experts. “It is a historic moment in the Parliament to move this draft, which is now ready for passage in Parliament at a future date,” the Speaker added.A draft of the proposed Code of Conduct had been given to each member and their suggestions were taken into consideration before reaching a final draft. The final draft, which was presented yesterday, was prepared by the Legal Draftsman. (AH)
