President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday claimed that common Opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena could not be trusted. He said that Sirisena was with him till late at night the day before he joined the Opposition and did not even say a proper goodbye. Speaking at an election rally in Nawalapitiya, the President questioned how one could trust a person of that nature and hand over the responsibilities of being president of a country. On the contrary, the President said that former UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake had refused to leave the UNP without following the proper formalities. The President recalled that Attanayake had met UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and handed over his resignation letter and then spoke to his staff before leaving the UNP to join the Government. President Mahinda Rajapaksa also said that now there were attempts to take him before the international criminal court over allegations of war crimes. He said that some elements were not happy with the fact that the LTTE was defeated and that the country had now been developed and was going forward. The President said that while in 2005 he sought a mandate to defeat terrorism and in 2010 he sought a mandate to rebuild the country, for his third term in office he would seek a mandate to build a disciplined society in Sri Lanka.
