Colombo based abstract artist, Mueen Saheed was recently invited to the office of the Chief Minister of the Northern Province to present him with an artwork based on the theme of women’s rights and rape.

Mueen who grew up in Trincomalee and formally a jewellery designer now pursues his passion of painting abstract art. Over the years he has been commissioned to do several paintings for world leaders including the Prime Minister of Malaysia Mohd Najib bin Abdul Razak.

“As an abstract artist, we are often and swiftly moved by situations, emotions and circumstances. This painting in particular refers to the gang rape incident,” he said. “The Chief Minister requested that the painting be hung in his office in memory of 18-year-old Vidya who was brutally murdered last month.”

Mueen said that the Chief Minister appreciated his work and requested that it be circulated to schools and other institutions. The painting which accompanies a poem is titled ‘By being a man, be a man’. “The poem highlights the value that women bring to our lives, be it our mother, wife, daughter or sister. It tells us that they ought to be cherished and protected.”

Mueen’s work focuses on themes and mirrors his experiences. He hopes that the proceeds from the sale of the prints of the painting will be in aid of a women’s trust.
