Murder of British tourist: Indictment sent to Tangalle

The indictment documents on Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman (UPFA) Sampath Vidanapathirana over the murder of British tourist Khuram Shaikh and the rape of his girlfriend, was sent to the Tangalle High Court today, the Attorney General’s Department said.
On the advice of the AG, the documents will be transferred to the Colombo High Court for the case to be heard, the AG’s Department added.
Khuram Shaikh was killed on Christmas day in 2011 while he was on holiday in Tangalle. British MP Simon Danczuk has been campaigning for justice over the murder of the tourist and Prime Minister David Cameron had said he will raise the issue when he visits Sri Lanka for the Commonwealth Summit.
Danczuk said it was important that the Prime Minister challenged Sri Lankan officials on their failure to deliver justice for the British tourist who was a worker for the Red Cross.
“I remain very much of the view that Sri Lankan politicians are trying to cover this case up to protect a close ally of the President,” he said.
“Khuram was hugely respected in Rochdale and around the world for the dangerous work he carried out for the Red Cross and he was killed in cowardly circumstances by a drunken mob on holiday. His family is still overcome with grief at this terrible loss and they rightly want to see justice done and his killers put behind bars.” (Colombo Gazette)
