Muslim community meet on way forward

Text and pic by Ashraff A. Samad A top level conference was held under the auspices of the International Y.M.M.A. Assembly to discuss problems facing the Muslim community in Sri Lanka. The conference was held at its head office at Colombo 7 Rosmead Place and President of International Y.M.M.A. Assembly President Ashraff Hussain presided over the meeting. Senior Lawyer Fousel Ameen and Senior Journalist N.M. Ameen, Secretary A. Razeen and Dr. M.Y. Yousf also addressed the problems the Muslim community has faced over the last three years. A total of 330 incidents which have happened to the Muslim community in several parts of the country have been identified and recorded and the relevant authorities were informed yet so far no action has been taken by Government. The following five decisions were taken and passed by the members: 1.Placing matters before the Human Right Commission on the incidents against the Muslims from 2012 to date 2.A discussion with the Buddhist, Catholic and Hindu movements on the religious and cultural attacks by Buddhist fundamentalist organisations 3.Without the involvement of politicians a high level delegation comprising of lawyers, doctors, lecturers of universities, and the intellectuals of this country to meet and explain the situation of the Muslims of this country to the diplomats of Islamic countries. 4.Releasing a book on the three languages on the incidents which have taken place recently to threaten Muslims in terms of religion and culture. 5.Requesting the President of our country to look into the matter and enforce discipline and law and order.
