The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka has written to President Mahinda Rajapaksa drawing attention to the threat made against the organisation by the General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), Galaboda Aththe Gnansara Thero. The BBS monk had said he would “take care of” the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka for urging the President to refuse a visa to Ashin Wirathu from Myanmar, the leader of the 969 Movement. Speaking at a BBS conference yesterday, Galaboda Aththe Gnansara Thero said that the Muslim Council had no right to urge the President to prevent Ashin Wirathu from visiting Sri Lanka to take part in the BBS conference. The Muslim Council says the hate campaign by Galaboda Aththe Gnansara Thero and some other Buddhist extremists continues despite the tragedy and violence witnessed in Aluthgama and Beruwala in June this year. The Muslim Council also said that the BBS continues to misquote and blaspheme the holy Quran, thereby creating hatred amongst non-Muslims towards Islam and Muslims. “We wish to bring to Your Excellency’s kind attention that the Muslims have registered a case in the Magistrate’s Court, Colombo and another complaint has been made at the Religious Police Division at the Ministry of Buddha Sasana against venerable Gnansara Thero for misquoting the holy Quran on previous occasions,” the Muslim Council added.
