United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) General Secretary Susil Premajayantha yesterday asserted that his statement on former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s nomination would be proven on 13 July.
Five days ago, Premajayantha released a statement saying that former President Rajapaksa would be given nominations from the UPFA to contest the next general election.
Answering the questions raised by media representatives, Premajayantha said that he did not want to make false statements about the UPFA nomination as well as former President Rajapaksa’s nomination.
“I have made a statement that former President Rajapaksa will be given nomination from UPFA. I can’t reveal all the secret information over UPFA nominations. However everyone will realise that my statement was not false when the UPFA hands over its nominations list on 13 July,” Premajayantha said.
Premajayantha added that some candidates facing allegations of fraud may not obtain nominations from UPFA to contest the next election.
“We can’t name the candidates who are going to have nominations from the UPFA. However, we can say some will miss the opportunity because of allegations of fraud,” Premajayantha stated.
Commenting about the UPFA’s future political agenda, Premajayantha said that they would contest the upcoming election with a five-year plan.
“We expect to contest the forthcoming election as an alliance. We have solved all the problems which we had over the last few months. We will never conduct separate press conferences here and there again. We have become one,” Premajayantha stated.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) yesterday insisted that there was no rift with the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and said that they would contest the parliamentary elections together.
SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said that several rounds of talks were held over the past few days between SLFP and UPFA partners, and the talks were positive.
