Naval training base to be relocated

The Sri Lankan Government has decided to relocate a naval training centre from the East of the country in order to return the land it was built on back to its original owners.

Addressing a media briefing, Eastern Province Governor Austin Fernando has said that the Government had decided to relocate the naval training centre from its present location in Sampur. He said the decision to shift the camp was taken on the approval of all stakeholders including the Navy Commander and the Defence Secretary.

The Government has taken the measure to release 237 acres of land, which was under the Sri Lanka Navy, back to its original owners.

On a previous occasion the Governor had stated that an alternative plot of land would be allocated for the establishment of the training centre.

The Sampur Naval Recruit Training Centre was first established on 15 October 2007 with the aim of catering to the growing needs of training naval personnel.

According to the Government Information Department, its proximity to the Trincomalee naval base and the Eastern seaboard proved ideal for further securing the region against any destabilising activity either by the LTTE or any external powers. (colombopage)
