Naval personnel on Saturday arrested 20 Indian fishermen along with their four fishing trawlers while they were engaged in poaching in Sri Lankan waters. Navy personnel in a naval craft attached to the North Central Naval Command on routine patrol, arrested the 20 Indian fishermen well within Sri Lankan waters north of Mannar on 5 July, the Navy said. The arrested fishermen and the trawlers were handed over to officials of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Mannar for legal action. Despite the arrests by the Sri Lankan Navy, Tamil Nadu fishermen continue to encroach on Sri Lankan waters, thus affecting the livelihoods of local fishermen.
